Performance "Silent Songs of the Wind"
with children from the Cultural School Sortland and their parents,
(folk)dancing together

FOLK DANCE:
NORDLANSPOLS.
(FEMALE PART)
Rhythm: even, ¾
Music: live. Music accompanies the dance, dancers are in dialogue with musician(s)
Typical instruments: fele (4 strings fiddle). Sometimes (more rare) accordeon
Spacial arrangement: continuous move counter-clockwise in a circle.

DANCE LANGUAGE
Steps: bouncing, fast triplet steps, accent on the first one (down-up-up), almost running.
Steps are quick and light. 3: heavy-light-light.
Feet: heels a bit up.
Legs: continuous steps.
Torso: straight
Arms: holding hands, for turns arms go up, arm movements when partners move around each other, changing the grip
Head: no specific head positions. Looking straight or at a partner.
Quality: bouncing, a bit jumpy, almost running steps. More in the air.
A woman has less a following role, roles are interchangeabel. dance has a playful character, flirtation, playing with each other.
Mimetic actions: no
Specials (female «tricks»): spinning-turns.
COSTUME
Name: nordlandsbunad
Skirt: long, pleated wool skirt, green or blue (green – inland, blue – coast)
Lofoten – drakt (not approved as a bunad).
Apron: made from wool, linen or calico.
! Jacket/poncho: for colder times (special for nothern Norway)
Bodice: made of wool, silk or plush. The bib can be decorated using embroidery, applique, beads, ribbons and lace. Flowers represent the flora in the north
Blouse: white with long spacy sleeves.
Headdress: cap / piece of decorated fabric / folded silk kerchief
Hairstyle: indicator of female marital status. Unmarried – hair is wrapped in a band and tied up in a circle at the crown of her head.
Shoes: flat shoes. Black
